If there’s one Premier League transfer that has so far backfired for everyone involved, except maybe the selling party, it’s Leander Dendoncker to Wolverhampton.
The young Belgian, desperate to leave Anderlecht, did everything in his power to force a move to somewhere else, but the landing spot he ended up on hasn’t worked out.
With just 189 minutes to his name, the 23-year-old has barely featured under Nuno Espirito Santo, and there’s already been talk in Belgium of alternatives being found down the player’s end.
VoetbalNieuws in Belgium appear to claim that Anderlecht have thought about bringing their former starlet back to the club, but there’s a bit of a catch.
This isn’t explained in their article, this is mostly us looking at the situation.
As things stand, Dendoncker is on loan with Wolverhampton, with the Premier League side expected to pay a compulsory fee of around €12m come the end of the season.
VoetbalNieuws mention the defender could return on a loan, but for that to happen in January, Wolves would have to pay Anderlecht the fee before sending him back.
Since that seems unlikely, because they’ll have planned the finances to do so come the end of the campaign, the only other option for a return would be to cancel the deal altogether, and Dendoncker would become, once again, a full-time employee at the Belgian side.
Since that doesn’t seem like a serious possibility either, the Belgium international appears a bit stuck in Wolverhampton for the time being.
We’ll have to see what happens, but a return to Anderlecht in January seems like a long shot.
