Last September, Nottingham Forest allowed Jonjo Shelvey to join Çaykur Rizespor on a loan deal until the end of this season.
A month later, Çaykur Rizespor board member and spokesman, Hasan Yavuz Bakır, said his side don’t have an option or obligation to make the midfielder’s stay permanent.
He had also insisted the Turkish club will sit down and talk with Nottingham Forest over the possibility of extending the 32-year-old’s stay beyond this season.
Fast forward to May and Hasan Yavuz Bakır has again talked about Shelvey’s future, and his comments are relayed by Ajanspor.
Steve Cooper, who was in charge at Nottingham Forest until December, didn’t include the midfielder in his plans at the start of the season. This convinced him to join Çaykur Rizespor on loan and the move has paid off for him.
The former Newcastle United man has made 30 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and registering seven assists in the process.
Hasan Yavuz Bakır, who’s a member of Çaykur Rizespor’s board of directors, said the club is pleased with the Nottingham Forest owned player’s performances.
“Jonjo Shelvey is happy in Rize and we are happy with Shelvey’s performance. However, Shelvey’s contract with his club Nottingham Forest continues. If financial conditions arise, we will add Shelvey to our squad,” he said.
Shelvey’s current deal with the Reds lasts until 2025.
