West Ham United’s pursuit of Gonzalo Montiel has been reported for a few months now, since their attempt to sign him back in January.

Things went quiet for a while, especially because the possibility of relegation had a big impact on the club’s plans for the transfer window.

At the end of June, the English press claimed that in case the Hammers stayed in the Premier League, then they should make a €7m offer for the River Plate right-back.

And in a quite strange report from Marca, it’s claimed that this bid has been rejected by the Argentine side.

They first take the reports from Germany which say that Schalke 04 are interested in signing the 23-year-old.

Then Marca points out that West Ham are also interested in the player, and even made an offer of €7m to sign him ‘a few days ago’, but River Plate rejected it for not being big enough.

This offer wasn’t widely reported in Argentina, so let’s see if new claims show up in the coming days.
