West Ham United had been one of the clubs in the race for Vasco da Gama wonderkid Andrey Santos, according to new reports from Brazil.

This information is brought by UOL, who now features a story about how the youngster got prepared for a move to Europe.

There, it’s pointed out that as soon as Andrey Santos stood out featuring for Vasco, the likes of Barcelona and West Ham ‘made contact’ to sign him.

The midfielder ended up being linked to a few more Premier League sides in the past few weeks, until being sold to Chelsea. As reported by the Brazilian media, he’s ready to sign for the Blues in a €23m deal, including bonuses, as soon as he passes his medical.

UOL doesn’t say how much West Ham have been willing to pay for the signing. Vasco fans consider that the player is moving for too little, with streamer Casimiro commenting at the weekend that the Rio de Janeiro club are ‘donating’ their starlet to Chelsea by agreeing to a small price.

So perhaps if the Hammers had made a higher bid, they’d have had the chance of winning that race.
