As Sporting’s chase for Anderlecht defender Zeno Debast has been a big story in the Portuguese media, West Ham United should probably be interested in what newspaper O Jogo has to say about it today.
Lions and Hammers are both said to be interested in the 20-year-old, and it seems it’s the Lisbon side who are moving first to get the summer signing done.
The newspaper writes that even though Sporting’s initial €15m was not accepted by Anderlecht, the Portuguese club are already working on a new attempt, given the Belgian side’s willingness to negotiate.
The fact that Debast’s contract expires in 2025 makes a transfer a lot more likely, especially because he already told his club that his will is to make a move this summer. That’s why he hasn’t even received an offer to extend his deal.
West Ham are again named as one of the clubs who should compete for the signing, alongside the likes of AC Milan, Eintracht Frankfurt, PSV and Ajax.
A big disadvantage the Hammers could have against some of these clubs is that Debast reportedly wants a side who’ll be featuring in the Champions League next season, and that’s something Sporting nearly have guaranteed.
So West Ham would need to gather other arguments to convince him.
Maybe the Premier League would be a factor in that.
