Once a regular at Anfield, Simon Mignolet, ever since Jürgen Klopp first invested in Loris Karius and then Alisson Becker, is now firmly the second string goalkeeper.
Barely getting a look in and solely featuring in the Carabao Cup so far, the 30-year-old has voiced his displeasure regarding his situation many times in hope of getting a move elsewhere so that he can get some minutes.
However, Liverpool appear reluctant to part ways with the Belgium international, as he provides them with an experienced backup should anything happen to their new Brazilian star.
That’s why Mignolet is still there, and that’s part of the reason why a move to Napoli failed to materialise in the summer.
Said transfer was talked about a lot, but never appeared close to being completed.
However, speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb, Tonci Martic, who is said to have had a hand in the dossier, explained what happened.
He said: “It’s true. We were even close to an agreement, but, in the end, they decided to go for Ospina. We’ll see in January if anything happens.”
After all, Arsenal were in a better situation, having bought Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen, as well as having Petr Cech already, meaning they could afford to let the Colombian go on loan without damaging their squad depth.
As Martic said, January could open more avenues, but convincing Liverpool could prove difficult.
