On Friday, we covered a report from Portuguese newspaper Record which stated Newcastle United could offer €20-25m for Rogers Fernandes.
It was even said the offer could arrive at SC Braga next week, and would clearly be a huge amount for a 16-year-old. Earlier reports had explained Roger would likely continue on loan at Braga, potentially until he’s 18, and that signing the best youngsters around is part of Newcastle’s long term project.
Saturday’s edition of Record goes over similar and explains that a fee over €20m for such a young player would be ‘unprecedented business’ for Portuguese football. The Braga youngster would become the youngest player to have left the country for a fee higher than €20m.
Still, that amount seems an awful lot even if Roger is very highly rated. There’s a possibility Newcastle would want a big chunk of that figure to be dependent on potential bonuses, and that should become clearer over the next week or so.
Borussia Dortmund and Ajax have already had offers rejected.
