The media around Napoli today has essentially been a never-ending stream of Italian journalists giving their opinion on Victor Osimhen and what should and shouldn’t happen with him.

This week has seen the player’s situation get a lot of attention. Partly, that’s due to the claim of a potential move to Chelsea with Romelu Lukaku moving in the opposite direction.

Osimhen’s agent then angrily took to social media to deny those claims and complain about fake news, saying it was disrespectful to talk about his client like that because he was top scorer when Napoli won the Scudetto.

However, as many of the journalists have pointed out, that wasn’t last season but the previous campaign. When Napoli were on their way to glory in 2022/23, he scored 31 goals from 30 matches.

Last season, with Napoli in chaos on and off the pitch, he scored 17 goals in 32 matches. Therefore, the chances of the Serie A club getting €100m+ are long gone.

That’s encouraged some to suggest it would be a good thing if he stayed another year, extending his contract to protect Napoli.

Giovanni Scotto has largely ruled that out, and also brought Chelsea back into the picture. CalcioNapoli24 quote him as saying: “As of today, there are no openings for Osimhen to remain at Napoli. The will to separate is mutual and remains the same, nor obviously has Conte asked to change the agreements. There are no clauses or tacit agreements for a confirmation, much less a hypotheses with a lowered salary.

“Conte will also wait patiently for the operation to go through, with Lukaku waiting without looking around. The goal is to resolve the issue by the first match of the championship. In any case, the Nigerian will not be used, not even in the Coppa Italia. Clearly, anything can happen but for now Osimhen remains on the way out: his preferences include PSG and Chelsea, Saudi Arabia is currently only a hypothetical scenario. In any case, it will be the striker who chooses his next team.”
