Real Madrid signed Marco Asensio from Mallorca in 2014 and before the Spanish capital club tried to secure his services, there was also an interest from Barcelona, which has been widely reported over the years.
Thursday’s edition of Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims the La Liga winners are not the only club to miss out on signing the 22-year-old as it’s claimed Tottenham Hotspur made the mistake of not signing the Spain international.
In Mauricio Pochettino’s first season at the north London club, their scout had watched Asensio in action for Mallorca against Real Zaragoza and he recommended the Premier League side to immediately move for the player.
Spurs were asked to sign the attacker when the Champions League winners’ president, Florentino Perez, had yet to make an approach, but they didn’t follow up on the recommendation.
Mundo Deportivo also mentions the scout who suggested Spurs to sign Asensio was Ramon Planes, who became as an assistant to Barcelona technical secretary, Eric Abidal, in June.
Looking at the way he has progressed at Real Madrid, if the claims are true it looks like a transfer mistake from Tottenham.
