Friday’s edition of AS has a special on potential bargains for the summer window, with it being thought La Liga clubs may struggle to spend big in the next market.
The Covid-19 crisis has directly impacted the finances of teams, and there’s a general nervousness about what the future will bring. That doesn’t present the best basis for investment, so transfer options which will be low cost are even more popular than usual.
One of the men in the special is Jan Vertonghen, with the Tottenham player increasingly mentioned around Europe as one of the top free transfers for the next window.
AS value the defender at €14.5m, and say he may not renew with Tottenham because of the club’s ‘bad season’.
Italy’s sport media have been covering Vertonghen’s situation daily, however, there’s been contradicting claims.
Whilst it’s clear he’ll be available on a free transfer should he decide to walk out on Spurs, it’s also been reported he wants high wages, a long contract, and a big agent commission.
That could be where Spanish clubs would hit a wall.
