Tottenham are still in the hunt for the São Paulo striker Jonathan Calleri. News from Tutto Mercato Web say the Spurs should be making a bid for the player soon, as the Argentine will have to chose between renewing his contract in Brazil and signing for the English club.
Italian side Fiorentina are also said to be interested, but they would be underdogs in the race.
Calleri belongs to Maldonado, a Uruguayan club who are used as an investment fund by the Figer Group. They signed the player from Boca Juniors for €11m in January and immediately sent him on loan to São Paulo.
Their intention would now be to sell him to an European club or to loan him until he’s proven in a top league.
Sport Witness have learned that the striker is very likely to leave São Paulo next month. His contract was actually expiring in June, but it was automatically renewed for one month after the Brazilian club reached the Copa Libertadores semifinals.
The only possibility for São Paulo to try to keep Calleri is in case they win the Copa Libertadores, so the club would want to count on the striker to play the World Cup of Clubs in December.
But his contract was made to expire exactly during the European transfer window, since it has always been in the agents plans to send him to Old Continent this summer.
São Paulo have no conditions to dispute a transfer to European clubs, so with no contract and no money, the Brazilian side are short of leverages to fight to keep the player.
