Unfortunately, Toby Alderweireld to AS Roma is a story that isn’t going to go away anytime soon.
Despite being sent packing a number of times by Daniel Levy and co., the Italians continue to try and sign the Tottenham defender, using Franco Baldini as their main weapon.
Gazzetta dello Sport report on Wednesday that the former Spurs technical director has been ‘working over the past few hours’ on the deal, but the Premier League side refuse to budge, even warning them the price could even increase once the €28m release clause expires on Thursday.
The narrative appears to be the same all over Italy, as Il Tempo reckon Tottenham will up the asking price to around €45m.
It seems Roma have no intention of triggering the release clause in the Belgian’s contract, especially as they are trying to bolster their squad elsewhere, with deals for Gonzalo Higuain and potentially Milan’s Suso being worked on.
They would cost around €70m (ish) altogether, and having already spent a decent amount of money on players like Amadou Diawara and Jordan Veretout, the bank account is starting to feel the strain.
