Tottenham have ‘very unusual’ clause to buy player – Spurs have negotiated good, but strict, deal

Tottenham have to make a decision on whether to sign Timo Werner on a permanent basis by June 14^th.

That’s according to BILD, who report that the purchase clause in the forward’s current loan deal expires after that point.

They explain that the striker would like to stay in London, having enjoyed his time with Tottenham so far, but it remains to be seen whether Tottenham want to keep him.

They have an option to sign him on a permanent basis for €17m but that has to be activated by June 14^th, which is the start of the European Championship.

That’s a ‘very unusual and early’ clause and point in time, with Leipzig having usually provided such options at a late date. Dominik Szoboszlai, for example, had a clause that did not expire until the end of June.

However, Rouven Schröder has preferred to flip the script with Werner, setting an early deadline to give himself ‘planning security’ and not let the situation drag out across the summer.

His decision to do so is also seen as clever as if Tottenham don’t take advantage of the purchase option, which BILD say is low by English standards, then Schröder and Werner have plenty of time to work out a deal until the end of the transfer window.

The onus is on Tottenham to make a quick decision, then, with Werner keen and the deadline set to get him for a lower fee.
