We’re now three days into the transfer window, and Tottenham haven’t yet used their January discount for Giovani Lo Celso.
As Marca report, Spurs can sign the player from Real Betis for €32m this month, rather than €40m in the summer, with the latter being a forced payment should the club qualify for the Champions League.
There’s no pressure on Tottenham to hurry and do this at the start of the winter market, but a lot of Betis’ plans depend on it. The Seville club have several potential outgoings to bring in money, and it’s stated the Lo Celso file is the closest to being ‘successfully completed’.
However, this is Tottenham, and just because it seemingly makes sense to use a clause, it doesn’t mean they’ll do so without some kind of battle.
What hasn’t been anticipated in Spain is Spurs potentially offering a lower amount than the €32m, knowing how much Betis are counting on it.
Alternatively, they could wait until the end of January or go for the summer gamble option.
Real Betis probably should have made the January clause applicable only in the first days of the month, they haven’t helped themselves.
