In need of a goalkeeper to provide backup for Hugo Lloris, Tottenham, through their director of football Fabio Paratici, turned their attention to Italy and brought in Pierluigi Gollini on loan from Atalanta.
The move has been relatively successful, although the Italian has yet to feature in the Premier League, making all of his appearances in cup and European competitions to date.
The 27-year-old has conceded 11 goals in 10 appearances for Tottenham, keeping just two clean sheets, and his future is now at a crossroads.
Spurs, who have an option to make the move permanent if they so wish, are, according to Tutto Atalanta, ‘currently considering whether or not to extend his loan’, something that has been reported before.
There’s also the option of paying Atalanta for a full transfer, but that doesn’t seem to be something they want to do, meaning he could also return to Italy.
What could work in his favour is the exit of Gian Piero Gasperini, who could leave at the end of the season after six years in charge, as this ‘could change the cards on the table’.
Juan Musso, who replaced Gollini in Bergamo, hasn’t exactly convinced either, and ‘in the event of a departure’, bringing back the Tottenham loanee would make sense.
This could lead to ‘a healthy and competitive dualism next season between Marco Carnesecchi’ and the current Spurs goalkeeper; a scenario that simply ‘cannot be ruled out’.
Something to think about, as Tottenham ponder their next move and whether they need Gollini next season.
