Tottenham are one of several clubs to show an interest in Barcelona’s Emerson this summer, with the Catalan giants contemplating a sale.
That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who report that the Brazilian’s future has taken an ‘unexpected turn’ in recent days.
The right-back, who is currently on loan at Real Betis and was set to stay there for another year, has become a ‘sought-after’ player in the market and as such, Barcelona are thinking about moving him on.
They are aware there is plenty of interest in his signature, with Tottenham, alongside the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Everton and Newcastle all ‘sounding out’ Barça about a potential move.
They are not the only club that is ‘moving’ though, with Tottenham also having made advances for his signature.
So far that has not progressed into a ‘formal offer’, which is the same as the other two Premier League sides, but it’s clear the interest is there.
Barcelona are therefore thinking about the sale to boost their own coffers, although there is a lack of transparency about how much they would want.
Emerson is part-owned with Betis but has a contract with Barça until 2024. The Catalans also have an option to purchase Betis’ 50% of the player for €9m, both this summer and next summer.
Presumably, then, they would be looking for a price above that range to ensure they make a profit on him at the very least.
Emerson, for his part, ‘does not rule out’ a move away from the Nou Camp. His ‘first desire’ has always been to return and establish himself as first choice.
However, he is keen to play in Europe because he knows that can get him an international call-up, so he is open to a move.
Tottenham could undoubtedly offer that, although it is more likely to be Europa League football than Champions League barring a dramatic turnaround from them.
