Rafael Benítez has been without a job since Everton sacked him at the start of this calendar year.
The former Liverpool manager returned to Merseyside when Everton appointed him as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor last summer.
Everton endured a difficult run under the Spaniard’s guidance, managing only five wins and 19 points from 19 league matches.
A series of poor run saw the Toffees slip down the table and that convinced them to sack the ex-Reds manager on January 16th. Frank Lampard was appointed as his successor at Goodison Park later that month.
Gazzetta dello Sport have published an interview with the departed Everton manager in today’s newspaper.
Two of his former clubs, Napoli and Inter Milan, are involved in the title race with AC Milan. When asked if Napoli winning the title will make him happy, Benítez said: “Beyond the trophies, I have always tried to leave a legacy and that is why I am very attached to the clubs where I coached. But I stayed longer in Naples than in Milan.
“It is a question of ‘legacy’, as the British say, and it was more marked: Insigne, Mertens and Koulibaly are still important.”
Staying on the topic of Serie A, the 61-year-old was asked to give his take whether a move to Milan would be the right step for Divock Origi. The Belgian’s contract at Liverpool expires in June and as it stands, he will leave Anfield as a free agent in the summer.
“Yes, also because the player’s [Origi’s] talent is unquestionable, he has excellent potential. The biggest unknowns are always related to the speed of adaptation,” Benítez explained.
Interestingly, there were no questions on his time at Everton or regarding his exit from the Premier League side back in January.
