Atlético Madrid progressed to the Champions League semi-final after overcoming Liverpool in the two-legged tie.
The Reds suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg and Naby Keïta was an unused substitute for the fixture in Spain. Jürgen Klopp then left the midfielder out of the squad for the return leg on Wednesday.
Keïta’s last appearance for the Merseyside club came in their 3-2 win over West Ham United in February. The Guinea international was left on the bench in his side’s 2-1 win over AFC Bournemouth last weekend.
According to Foot 224, a website specialising in Guinean football, the 25-year-old was available for selection to face Atlético as there were no concerns over his fitness.
Klopp’s decision to omit Keïta for the crucial European fixture has come as a ‘surprise’.
Guinean journalist and Foot 224’s co-founder, Amadou Makadji provides a further update as he states Keïta didn’t fit in the former Borussia Dortmund manager’s plan for the tie against the La Liga side.
It remains to be seen if Keïta will be provided an opportunity when Liverpool take on Everton in the derby on March 16th, should that match go ahead.
