Last week, Tottenham Hotspur were said to be interested in Benfica midfielder Ljubomir Fejsa.
Portuguese newspaper Record claimed the player was Mauricio Pochettino’s alternative to Adrien Silva, who Sporting had turned down a €20m bid for.
This story was strange from the beginning.
Firstly because we didn’t believe Pochettino would just go shopping in Lisbon in search for a new midfielder, and limit it to the one city.
Plus there was also the fact Fejsa could be even more expensive for Tottenham than Silva, considering how much of a winner he’s been for the Eagles.
Unsurprisingly, the rumour died right away. Nothing else was reported in the past few days, and now, the same newspaper comes up with a story saying Fejsa is set to sign a new contract with Benfica.
The player is expected to extend his deal until 2021, and obviously get a pay rise.
So Tottenham’s surprising interest at this stage of the transfer window was just, let’s say, a useful coincidence.
