Fortuna Dusseldorf sports director Christian Weber has admitted they are in talks to sign Brighton and Hove Albion youngster Michal Karbownik on a permanent basis in the summer.

He’s been speaking to Express in Germany as his club gears up for a busy summer transfer window once the season comes to an end.

One of the decisions he will have to make is on the future of Karbownik, who has been on loan from Brighton since the summer.

The 22-year-old has been a regular since then, featuring in starting XI 67% of the time in the league and 67% of the available minutes to boot.

The German side have an option to turn the loan into a permanent one and Express confirm as much, stating that stands at around €3m and it is ‘realistic’ that he will stay beyond the end of the campaign.

They are yet to take up that option to sign the Brighton man, but Weber admits he is in talks, albeit one of many sets of conversations he is having at this moment in time.

“The final phase of the season has begun. Of course, this means that internal decisions are being made and are imminent,” he said.

“Of course, I’m always on the phone. This is independent of the time of the season. Squad planning is an ongoing process. We collect impressions throughout the season. That applies to both the guys who are there and guys who might fit in with us.”

“We are moving things forward and are in talks (over Karbownik). But we don’t give any water level reports.”
