Thomas Muller’s situation at Bayern Munich has, at varying degrees, been an issue for the German media for several years.
Perhaps since Robert Lewandowski joined the club from Borussia Dortmund, there’s been some concern over whether Muller is as important as he should be.
To create drama in such a situation, transfers are always suggested, and for several windows it was Manchester United most linked with Muller. That always felt like it had something to it, due to the Louis van Gaal link, but there’s been a succession of other clubs linked since.
For SportBild it’s a favourite topic and they report several enquiries for Muller during the summer window. Juventus, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are the clubs named, but Muller wasn’t considering a move.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal were linked earlier on this year, and at the time it felt like Premier League teams thrown in once again to then ‘lose’ over a potential transfer.
Juventus have been linked for some years, so potentially there’s an Antonio Conte connection at Chelsea. Liverpool have the Jurgen Klopp connection, with the Anfield club automatically linked to any good Bundesliga player, and Arsenal could benefit from Muller’s will to win.
But all of these clubs will know Muller is very unlikely to leave Bayern Munich. If things ever got really bad then it’s perhaps even likelier Carlo Ancelotti would go than the 27 year old. That’s why it’s always hard to believe when SportBild hand out a series of Ls to Premier League clubs.
As long as Muller isn’t a mainstay for Ancelotti, the stories will continue, and then when the German international is once again crucial for Bayern Munich, the story will change to: Haha, remember when Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool thought they had a chance of signing Muller.
