Nobody quite does arrogance or self-assuredness like the Spanish football press and that is very much on display from one newspaper today as Real Madrid gear up to take on Liverpool in the Champions League.
Step forward AS, who say Real Madrid ‘go to their refuge’ when they head to Anfield later this month.
The newspaper explains that Real Madrid have not tasted defeat against Liverpool since 2008/09, when they were famously beaten 4-0.
The next clash between themselves and Liverpool will continue ‘one of European football’s longest-running rivalries’ but it is one that has been in Madrid’s favour for some time.
They’ve not been beaten by Liverpool since 2008, and this tie is seen as the perfect time for them to ‘get out of the slump’ and return to winning ways. That’s because Anfield is seen as their ‘football refuge’.
The newspaper says Real Madri ‘feel a security’ when it comes to facing Liverpool, with a record of seven wins, three defeats and one draw in 11 meetings standing very much in their favour. They’re also on a 16-year long run of not being beaten by the Reds.
AS do stress that there isn’t an air of ‘tranquillity’ about the club knowing that they’re facing Liverpool, but they do feel security thanks to that record. And at a time when things aren’t going too well, they may even be looking forward to the trip.
We’d argue that may be a little delusional given Liverpool have lost one game all season so far and sit top of the Premier League and Champions League, score goals for fun and don’t concede many at the other end either.
AS are seemingly oblivious to that, though, demonstrating the kind of arrogance that usually comes back to bite you painfully.
