Darwin Núñez’s first year in Europe saw him score 16 goals and register three assists for Almería in the Spanish second division.

The striker has been attracting interest from across the continent, and from the Premier League, Sheffield United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton are named as suitors.

Earlier this week, Calciomercato.it explained the Saints have ‘submitted a written offer’ of €12m for the Uruguay international.

Various reports from Spain on Thursday talked about VfL Wolfsburg making an offer for the 21-year-old.

Another report from Calciomercato.it now claims Southampton and other English clubs are ‘working in the shadows’, but the German side are not giving up on acquiring the South American’s services.

Wolfsburg made a €20m bid, but their approach was turned down by Almería. The website states the Bundesliga side are studying raising their proposal to €25m (including bonuses).

It’s claimed the ‘first offers were rejected’, which could be from Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side and Wolfsburg.

Calciomercato.it claim the ‘fight’ is ‘between the Premier League [most likely Southampton] and Wolfsburg’ in signing Núñez this summer.
