Former Celtic defender Jeremie Frimpong has admitted his exit from the club in January came out of nowhere.
Frimpong brought an end to a two-year spell with Celtic at the end of the January transfer, securing a £9.9m move to Bayer Leverkusen.
He had been a regular for Celtic since arriving at the club from Manchester City in a £324,000 deal back in September 2019, racking up 51 appearances in all competitions as he became the club’s first-choice right-back.
His performances in Scotland had not gone unnoticed, with reports throughout December linking him with a move to Roma.
Indeed, it looked extremely likely that Italy would be his next destination before he made a the surprise move to Germany at the end of January instead.
That was a switch that caught most off-guard, including Frimpong, who told RP Online; “when I first heard of Leverkusen’s interest, it was a shock to me because I came from no man’s land. But of course, it made me happy.”
The key for Frimpong is to now establish himself with Leverkusen as he did at Celtic, something he is yet to really do.
He’s been limited to a substitute role in the Bundesliga thus far, although he did start both of their games against Young Boys in the Europa League.
Those two games ended in defeat, while he has only tasted success in the 5-2 win over Stuttgart at the end of the month, a run of form he admits he is not happy with.
“The results in the past few weeks have not been good. But we put ourselves in this situation. All we can do now is look ahead,” he added.
