According to Greek newspaper Sportday, via Sdna, Rangers are set to rival Celtic for the signature of AEK’s goalkeeper Vassilios Barkas, but it’s not all it seems.
Celtic have been linked with a move for the 26 year old in the past few weeks, after reports he could leave the Greek club at the end of the season. With the uncertainty over the future of Fraser Forster, Neil Lennon may be in the market for a goalkeeper this summer.
Steven Gerrard could be looking towards the future, given Allan McGregor is in the latter stages of his career. The 38 year old still has year left on his contract at Ibrox so looking ahead makes sense, although Rangers have signed Jon McLaughlin this week.
Interestingly, it’s suggested Rangers don’t have a real interest in Barkas, and it’s claimed they are only in for him to raise the price and make things difficult for Celtic.
The player has been key for Massimo Carrera’s side this season, making 28 appearances in all competitions.
Barkas’ contract with Athens club will expire at the end of June 2022.
