Newcastle United fans will currently be high on the club’s promotion back to the Premier League, and full of excitement for what the future may bring. HMRC raiding the club on Wednesday is an unwelcome distraction, and may well have genuine implications, but there’s still a feeling of optimism.
There’s no way fans of Newcastle United will be expecting a Premier League season in the bottom three, there’s an expectation that the club now needs to kick on. That will take investment, with Rafael Benitez this week revealing a budget of around €70m will be available to him.
Where that money is spent will be crucial, and Benitez already seems to have ideas for the kitty. Asked by Marca if he planned to add more Spaniards like Ayoze Perez, Benitez said: “We’ll keep progressing. It’s not a matter of Spaniards or not, but of signing good players. They need to be good professionals and to know the league.”
It very much sounds like Benitez’s preference is for Premier League experienced players, which is likely to cost Newcastle United more money than recruiting elsewhere.
