The most surprising result in Brazil this week was certainly Athletico Paranaense’s 3-0 win over Flamengo at the Maracanã Stadium in the Copa do Brasil semifinals. With that result, the Rio de Janeiro side were knocked out of the competition.
Manager Renato Gaúcho was heavily blamed for his side’s performance, and one of the problems pointed out by fans and media was the way he used Manchester United loanee Andreas Pereira in that match.
The 24-year-old, who’d been playing in central midfield, this time performed on the left wing, and had a very poor game. And now it seems not even his entourage is happy with it.
On Instagram, Matheus Diniz, who represents the Manchester United man, made a post which clearly seemed like a message to manager Renato Gaúcho.
“You have a race car and a rally car… Do you put the race car on the mountain?”
As O Dia covers it, they write: “The indirect message would be related to the fact that Andreas Pereira, who is a defensive midfielder, is being selected as an advanced midfielder at Flamengo in recent games and has had a drop in performance.”
As reported by the Brazilian media yesterday, Flamengo’s elimination means they’re missing out on between £3m and £6m, which is the money they’d make by going to the final.
That would undoubtedly help the club to afford the option to buy Pereira from Manchester United, as that would cost them €22m.
