Tottenham fans, there’s something you may be seeing a lot of in the coming months: The Spanish media taking aim at Gareth Bale and firing.
It’s been happening for years, with the press there having a very odd obsession with Bale’s love of golf, and now that he’s leaving there’s going to be all kinds of scores settled.
Unsurprisingly, Marca are out in front. On their Thursday back-page there’s a headline which reads: ‘Mou, Golf, Zidane’
Showing there’s still a remarkable level of bitterness over Bale being pictured with that iconic (or infamous) Welsh flag, Marca say: ‘What can be said about a guy who has allowed Madrid to be the world’s joke with “Wales, golf, Madrid”‘
Real Madrid threw ‘millions’ at the player and gave him the opportunity to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s successor, and it just didn’t work, complain Marca.
Then the Welshman, who is expected to join Tottenham soon, is the subject of a real personal attack. According to the Spanish newspaper he failed because of ‘apathy’, ‘lack of appetite’ and ‘British drowsiness’, and showed the ‘worst version of himself’.
Even his exit is described as the ‘final disappointment’ with Bale slammed for not giving up some of his wages in a pandemic, which Marca call ‘pure miserable selfishness’.
Real Madrid will rid themselves of seeing the player’s ‘contempt’ every day, and there’s not even the slightest reference to Bale’s achievements or any attempt to wish him luck.
