Tottenham Hotspur player Emerson Royal survived an attempted armed robbery in Brazil last night, according to local reports.
Globo Esporte writes that the 23-year-old was leaving a party in Americana, his home town, when he was approached by a criminal.
It turns out the Tottenham player was being followed by an undercover police officer, who had asked for a picture with him and was following him to his car. When noticing the guard, the attacker got scared and started shooting.
The outlet managed to speak to Emerson’s father, who detailed the scene.
“I was celebrating and on the way out, this whole case happened, which was very bad. A horror scene indeed. I don’t wish that on anyone,” Aparecido Leite de Souza told Globo Esporte.
“We didn’t notice because it was too fast. Probably around 20 shots.”
According to Globo Esporte, Emerson Royal is fine and went to the police station to file a report. The criminal was shot by police and subsequently taken to a hospital in Americana.
The player had only just arrived in Brazil following his season with Tottenham, and it’s fair to say this isn’t exactly how he’ll have wanted to start his summer break.
