Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku is getting targeted by some criticism in the Italian media, and not for the first time.

The comments were made by former Juventus and Fiorentina player Angelo Di Livio, who was interviewed by TV Play.

The pundit claimed that Lukaku is now far from showing his best form, given his recent performances with AS Roma.

“Lukaku had other characteristics in previous seasons. He was very strong in depth, you could never catch him, while now he is changing his type of game: he comes to meet you, he only plays with his back to the goal and he’s ruining himself because he is predictable and lazy,” said Di Livio.

“Before he was a force of nature, with Conte he was at his best. I don’t want him to be training to only play this game with his back to goal, because a good striker must know how to play with his back to the goal and then attack deep down.”

Since getting loaned by Chelsea to Roma, Lukaku had 16 goals and two assists in 30 appearances. He indeed had a great start with the Giallorossi, but hasn’t scored a goal since the 20th of January.

It remains a mystery whether the Serie A side will want to make a heavy investment in his permanent signing once the season is over, and that kind of public criticism only makes it more likely that they will try to get a big discount to get him signed if they do decide to go down that path.

This week, reports from the Belgian media claimed that Roma are happy with his performances and a ‘concrete engagement’ for his purchase exists.

There’s even a chance for him to move to the MLS, so it shall all depend on the offers that reach Chelsea’s table.
