Brighton and Hove Albion have been warned against a move for Ajax defender Calvin Bassey, with it claimed he doesn’t fit in with their style of play.

That’s according to Voetbal Primeur’s Done Deal podcast, who have questioned why the Seagulls would be interested in signing Bassey this summer.

The Nigerian defender has been with the Dutch giants since a move from Rangers last summer but endured a difficult first year in the Netherlands, with a series of up and down performances for them.

They had hoped he was the long-term replacement for Lisandro Martinez, but he’s not yet proven to be that, instead struggling to fill the gap left behind by the Argentinian.

That’s why reports in both the Netherlands and England linking him with a move to Brighton this summer have been met with scepticism from most corners.

That is certainly the case at Voetbal Primeur, who have questioned whether Roberto de Zerbi’s side have even watched the player over the last year.

“I think Brighton is really high, especially after last season, but I’m getting the feeling they haven’t seen a single Calvin Bassey game,” they’re quoted as saying in discussion about the defender.

“He doesn’t fit in at all with the football they play. Guardiola recently said about Brighton that it is the best football team in the world. Bassey fits in perfectly with that…” they added in a ‘cynical and sarcastic tone’.

The question is whether this is just another Brighton masterstroke nobody has yet seen coming, something the Seagulls are very adept at doing.

They have a talent for identifying players most would overlook and perhaps Bassey is another of those players and, if the deal goes through, these sorts of comments will look foolish in a year’s time.
