There’s a lot of talk about Dodi Lukebakio these days, as the Watford loanee is enjoying life at Fortuna Düsseldorf.
The 21-year-old has 11 goals and three assists to his name this season in 23 appearances, meaning speculation about his Vicarage Road future has been rife, especially since the Bundesliga side do not have an option to make the move permanent.
Set to return to Watford at the end of the season, Lukebakio could, off this form, be given a chance by Javi Gracia, who allegedly wanted him to stay around for the current campaign, but it seems it would take a lot for the Belgian to stay.
On top of telling Het Nieuwsblad his move to England last January was ‘a bad choice’, the winger also opened up to Sport/Foot in Belgium, where he went into detail about what happened following his transfer.
He said: “When I was in England, there were a few training sessions where teammates congratulated me at the end and were sure I’d make the team. In the end, I wasn’t even in the squad. How frustrating! I wanted to play so much, but wasn’t given a chance. At that point, you snap: you don’t want to work anymore.
“It was too much for me. Thankfully, that’s also where I told myself that wherever I ended up next year, I’ll prove my worth. What I want to do is play. I’ve found that happiness today. It had been so long since I’d known it.”
As for what happens in the future, Lukebakio isn’t thinking about that, just living ‘day to day’, trying to ‘make the most of his time with Düsseldorf’.
Despite admitting that Watford have been in touch, the forward will wait and see what happens come the end of the season before making his mind up.
