As the Portuguese media continues to follow Sporting’s efforts to sign Ruben Vinagre from Wolverhampton Wanderers, newspaper Record today has the reason why things haven’t been moving so fast.
The outlet explains that the fullback was supposed to travel to England this week. But the need for quarantine made him stay training at Seixal Clube 1925 for now, delaying any news about his future.
Record says that Sporting have already been in talks with Wolves for a move, as a loan with an option to buy is ‘on the table’. The Lions would nearly pay the player’s entire salary, which is about €800k net per season.
Regarding the permanent move, the Molineux side want the clause to be over €10m, which is below their initial request, that had been €15m.
Record writes that Vinagre’s intention is to stay in Portugal, following the six-month loan he’s just had at Famalicão.
Meanwhile, as newspaper Correio da Manhã writes about Benfica, they claim that the Eagles ended up ‘suspending’ the chances of a bid for Vinagre.
They’ve just signed Gil Dias from Monaco, and that was a choice from manager Jorge Jesus over the Wolves player. So unless they lose Alex Grimaldo this summer, there’s no longer any interest in battling Sporting for the signing.
