Matthew Benham started investing in Brentford in 2009 and went on to acquire 100 percent ownership of the club in February 2014.
Later that year, Benham became the majority shareholder of FC Midtjylland. Under his management, the Danish club went on win the domestic title for the first time in the 2014/15 season.
Since the two clubs share the same owner, the Bees and Midtjylland have good relations.
This has resulted in the Championship club allowing a few of their players go out on loan to the Superliga side over the past few years. In addition to this, it has also helped Brentford identify talents in Denmark.
Brentford currently have half a dozen Danish players in the squad and they are also managed by a Danish coach, Thomas Frank.
The Danes who arrived at Brentford are appealing to Midtjylland’s league rivals, FC Copenhagen. This has been confirmed by their manager, Ståle Solbakken, who also adds his side have to compete with Brentford in the transfer market.
“They have been extremely skilled at finding good, relatively inexpensive players. It is great coaching work by Thomas Frank and Brian Riemer, and then they are extremely skilled at picking the right players.
“They have Pontus Jansson in defence, Christian Nørgaard and Mathias Jensen in central midfield, and three outstanding players at the top. And that team has not cost them a lot of money compared to the competitors in the Championship. It has gone well.
“I’m not trying to take anything from FC Midtjylland here. They have done very well and FC Midtjylland and Brentford have a good package together. Brentford is a serious competitor for us in the transfer market, just as FC Midtjylland.
“They can make a good business out of it, when they can sign a player like Emiliano Marcondes between themselves. These types of deals are of course on the cards, if Brentford come to the Premier League.”
