Carlos Peña’s time at Rangers had been difficult even before Steven Gerrard took over at the Glasgow club. He’d had a mixed career before moving to Scotland, showing talent at times on the pitch but facing repeat problems off it.

Rangers took the gamble in 2017, and the following year he was sent on two loans back to Mexico, with Cruz Azul and Necaxa. Neither worked and it quickly became apparent Rangers would struggle to get their money back for the player.

Gerrard took over in April 2018 and showed little interest in trying to roll the dice again with Peña. When asked in January 2019 if he had an update on Peña’s Rangers future, Gerrard simply said to ask other people, making it clear he wanted nothing to do with the situation.

The player’s contract with Rangers was terminated the following month, and he signed for GKS Tychy in Poland, a move which didn’t go well either.

Now, AS Mexico report he’s had to drop down to the third division, and has taken an opportunity to join Mexico’s Guerreros de la Plata.

It’s the ninth club of the player’s very varied career.
