Wout Weghorst will be returning to Burnley this summer from Hoffenheim, despite them considering his loan spell a success.

That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who reports that the German side have no intention of signing the striker on a permanent basis from Burnley.

Weghorst joined Hoffenheim on loan from Burnley in the summer following his short spell at Manchester United and Besiktas before that.

It was made clear at the time he was not a part of the Clarets’ plans moving forwards and the hope had been he could find himself in the Bundesliga once again and trigger a permanent move.

He ended up being a regular for Hoffenheim this season, featuring in 65% of the available minutes in the Bundesliga and managing seven goals and three assists in 28 games to boot.

Plettenberg reports that the German side consider the deal a success and those in charge at the club are very happy with his performances but, they will not be offering him a permanent deal.

Instead, the 31-year-old will be sent back to Burnley at the end of his loan deal, who will then need to decide what to do with him.

Given Weghorst has expressed no desire to play in the Championship and he’s in the final year of his deal, that would suggest a transfer away permanently is on the cards, although not to Hoffenheim.
