For being Argentina’s number one goalkeeper since 2009, Sergio Romero is a much respected figure in the national team.
That’s why media and fans were surprised that he didn’t get one single minute in either of the two friendlies against Mexico in the last international break.
In an interview at the airport this week, Romero has claimed he knew he wouldn’t be playing, as testing the young goalkeepers is an important thing for manager Lionel Scaloni.
However, outlet Doble Amarilla has a different version of the story.
They say Scaloni has told Romero he was only being called up because Franco Armani, from River Plate, was too busy with the Copa Libertadores final’s schedule.
Doble Amarilla claims that if Romero doesn’t get a starting spot at Manchester United or doesn’t start excelling in his club performances somewhere, then his national team career should be over at the age of 31.
This is not the first time we see this kind of claim coming from Argentina, as in January last year many outlets said he would miss the World Cup in case he continued to sit on the bench.
Will that convince Romero to look for a club where he will be the number one? It probably should.
