On December 16th, Sport reported Barcelona have held talks with Edinson Cavani and he is ‘waiting for Manchester United’ to decide on his future in the ‘coming days’.
Later that day, we covered claims made by ESPN Brasil that despite interest shown by Corinthians and Palmeiras, the striker’s future points towards La Liga. It wasn’t explained whether or not the Catalan club will pay a fee to get the 34-year-old in the winter market.
Cavani has struggled with injuries and this, coupled with Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival, has seen him settle for limited game this season. Barcelona are keen to sign him as Sergio Agüero’s replacement, after the player announced his retirement from football on Wednesday.
According to TyC Sports, Boca were in negotiations with the ex-Napoli star and the last contact was crucial for the latter to make his ‘new destination official to those in charge of carrying out the negotiations’. It’s claimed he has ‘rejected’ the Argentine side ‘because he would choose Blaugrana’.
They further add: ‘Edinson Cavani was the stellar reinforcement that the club [Boca] wanted, but the Uruguayan forward rejected the offer and revealed that he will go to Barcelona.’
Despite having a contract with United until next June, the frontman’s intention would be to ‘anticipate a departure from England’ from January 1st, to join Xavi Hernández’s side. TyC Sports also don’t mention whether or not Barca will pay a fee to the English club.
Meanwhile, TNT Sports are backing Cavani to join the Spanish giants next month. They further explain the player will ‘terminate his contract with Manchester United’ to become a new Barca player.
