Kalvin Phillips is fast becoming one of the favourites for Juventus to sign in the January window, as the Turin club desperately look for a midfielder.
They’ve lost Nicolo Fagioli and Paul Pogba to long suspensions, one for breaking gambling rules and one for a failed doping test, and need reinforcements.
Phillips is largely valued in Italy for his performances for Leeds United and England, because it’s not thought there’s been enough on show at Manchester City to go off.
The midfielder was a regular for Leeds United and a big part of their team, hence Pep Guardiola’s side investing big in him, but he just hasn’t been able to show his stuff since leaving Elland Road and a switch is inevitable.
Italian reports on Tuesday spoke of a meeting in London between Phillips’ agents and Juventus, and therefore the story is only growing.
Wednesday’s edition of Gazzetta della Sport has an interview with Fabio Capello and he was, of course, asked about the situation.
Even he had to look back to the Leeds United spell.
Capello is quoted as saying: “Phillips in the English national team and in his time at Leeds always seemed to me to be a complete midfielder.”
Should he move then he’d need to quickly get back to that form.
Juventus are only looking for a loan deal, so, who knows, if Leeds United clinch promotion and Phillips is likely again looking for a new club next summer… then the big return could be on.
