On June 14th, Sport reported that Everton want to sign Jasper Cillessen ‘as soon as possible’.

These claims from the Catalan newspaper surprised us because they stated the Toffees could be without the first choice goalkeeper. There was no suggestion about the possible sale of Jordan Pickford in the report.

Saturday’s edition of the same outlet claims the Netherlands international, who is the ‘goal of Everton’ is ‘close to signing’ for the Premier League side.

They further go on to suggest Marco Silva’s side ‘are in a hurry’ to bring in a new goalkeeper and the good relations between the two clubs speed up the operation.

In today’s report, they explain why Everton are chasing Cillessen.

Sport explain it is ‘almost certain’ that Paris Saint-Germain will sign David de Gea and Pickford will replace the Spaniard at Manchester United.

The newspaper states, ‘these moves would leave the whole of Goodison Park without one of its bastions and, to cover the frame, the Toffees have opted for the goalkeeper of the Netherlands.’

Though there have been reports in England and France of PSG’s interest in De Gea, it is still not clear if the latter will leave Old Trafford.

Even if United allow De Gea to leave, it is not given that Pickford will be his replacement.

With Pickford’s chances of leaving his employer in the summer transfer window looking slim and with Everton already agreeing a deal for Jonas Lössl, it hardly makes sense for them to push for Cillessen, even though Sport claim otherwise.
