In the past few weeks, despite making it clear that Leeds United lead the race for Azzedine Ounahi, the Italian media have made it clear that Napoli continue to be firm in the race.

It turns out we may now know why the local press always sounds confident that the Serie A side can still land the Angers star.

That should come from Napoli themselves, where club chiefs now make it clear that they remain strong in the competition.

As sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli spoke to SportMediaSet before the cup clash against Cremonese, he was asked about Ounahi, and even mentioned Leeds United’s efforts to sign the player.

“We are optimistic about Ounahi despite the inclusion of Leeds. The player is good but right now we are not thinking about the transfer market, we’re focused on our team and on doing well on a daily basis,” Giuntoli told Sport Mediaset (via Tutto Mercato Web).

It’s been a while since the Italian press started claiming Leeds are offering €25m to sign Ounahi from Angers. That’s a lot more than Napoli, who don’t want to spend over €15m.

The Whites’ salary offer is also said to be better, as they want to pay €2.5m per season, while the Italian side only put €1.5m on the table.
