Davy Klaassen’s rebirth in the Bundesliga is no secret, it’s been covered endlessly over the past few months.
After a difficult time at Everton, the midfielder has found a better setting for himself at Werder Bremen and as his form has returned so has his enjoyment of the game.
The Dutchman has spoken several times about the style of football at Goodison Park not suiting him, and he’s still happy to speak openly about the period he had with the Toffees.
In an interview with Voetbal International, Klaassen has explained that he was happy in the summer when it was made clear to him there was no desire at Everton for him to stick around: “After three training sessions, the coach came to me and said that for my position he had confidence in others. It may sound crazy, but I was happy with the clarity of Everton. That is better than again entering into a hopeless battle.
Had things been slightly different then Klaassen would have swapped Everton for Napoli and not Werder Bremen, and the 25 year old has explained how the January move first came about and then collapsed: “A loan in the winter break did not seem ideal to me anyway. By the time you’re used to things, the season is over. But on the last day of the transfer market they (Napoli) became very concrete, including ab option to buy.
“At Everton trainer Sam Allardyce said it was a great opportunity for me. All in all, I decided to go to Naples that morning. I was waiting at home for the signal that I could board the plane. Until Napoli called later that day and suddenly expressed doubts. That I could not play in the Europa League for them, that there were some other things. That did not suit me. It seemed better to blow everything off from both sides.”
Enjoying his time in Germany, there’s no sense of what might have been from Klaassen, and he’s relieved to have his career now back on track.
