Monday’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport details that, as it stands, Crystal Palace is the favourite club to land Martin Caceres.
However, that point of view isn’t universal in Italy. Tuttomercatoweb have spoken to Niccolo Ceccarini, who they describe as a market expert, and he’s named two other English clubs as possible destinations for the free agent.
Ceccarini explained: “Caceres, after the medical examination, decided not to accept the proposed economic offer from Milan and now is leaving for London: on him there are Southampton and Sunderland.”
Caceres has been close to joining several clubs since his Juventus contract expired last summer. Crystal Palace are the ones linked most strongly at the moment, but it’s not the first time Southampton and Sunderland have been linked with the player.
Turning down the financial offer from Milan after already passing a medical, it’s clear Caceres is looking for a big economic offer, and perhaps a commitment beyond the end of this season.
Caceres hasn’t played since February because of an achilles rupture. The 29 year old was fit again in October but without a club.
It would be a gamble for Crystal Palace, Southampton or Sunderland, and could be a costly one at that, but given the Uruguayan can play across the defensive line, someone may take that gamble soon enough.
