Dayot Upamecano has been linked with a move away from RB Leipzig in the upcoming transfer window.
A handful of clubs in the Premier League are looking at him and Italian website Calciomercato provides the latest update on this case.
It’s claimed that Manchester City and Manchester United are ‘in the background’ for the 21-year-old.
With regards to the English champions, the report states Pep Guardiola ‘highly appreciates’ the qualities of the centre-back.
The Etihad side struggled defensively this season in the absence of Aymeric Laporte. The former Athletic Club Bilbao man has made eight appearances in all competitions as injuries have forced him to spend time away from the pitch.
Last summer, City lost Vincent Kompany and they allowed Eliaquim Mangala to leave the club.
Having failed to bring in a new centre-back before the start of the season, the Premier League winners will be looking to strengthen that area when the transfer window opens.
Even though Guardiola appreciates Upamecano, City will find it difficult to complete his signing because Calciomercato claims Bayern Munich are in pole position to acquire the Leipzig defender’s services.
In addition to this, the Bavarian club are ready to pay Upamecano’s release clause, which will drop from €100m to €60m in the summer.
With Bayern ahead of City in the race for the Frenchman, the latter will have to look elsewhere for a new centre-back in the market.
