Even Matz Sels himself now admits that he didn’t expect the move to Nottingham Forest to take place at the end of the January window.

It was on deadline day that the Tricky Trees made his signing from Strasbourg official, paying €8m for his arrival.

Sels was now interviewed by La Derniere Heure, and as quoted by Voetbal Nieuws, he claims Nottingham Forest’s move for him was a surprise.

“It was not planned that I would leave in January” said the goalkeeper.

“I wanted to experience the European Championship and then maybe look for a new challenge. But the Premier League is the biggest league in the world and so you shouldn’t think too long about that.”

Sels also revealed that he only heard about Nottingham Forest’s interest on the day of the transfer, so he didn’t even have many hours to think about the possibility.

“Apparently Chelsea and BlueCo held talks with Nottingham during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. By Thursday morning, everything was pretty much settled between the clubs. That was the signal for me that it might be better to leave. If the club does not want to let you go, they will not do a deal at the last minute.”

Since arriving at Nottingham Forest, Sels already made two starts for the club, in the matches against Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

As he and Matt Turner are expected to be the Tricky Trees’ main options for the positions, that could lead to the departure of Odysseas Vlachodimos, with reports in the past few days claiming that he should leave the club in the summer, unless a big turnaround takes place. It’s said the Reds are willing to make €4-5m with his sale.

Sels’ transfer was also detailed by RMC Sport a few days after the events, in what can only be described as a frantic 48 hours.
