Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Hugo Bueno was promoted to the first team this season and made his debut for them when he came off the bench in the 4-1 win over Nottingham Forest in October.

Since then, the left-back made six starts and Julen Lopetegui’s arrival did not have an impact on his place in the side.

Wolves took the 20-year-old from CD Areosa in 2019 and handed him a contract after he impressed them during a trial. Mundo Deportivo had a chat with the defender and asked him about how his move to the Premier League side took shape.

“At the [Areosa’s] youth team, it was when Wolves saw me. They offered me to go on an England trial for a week, training with the U18 team. I played a couple of friendlies, and they told me they liked it, but they asked me to do more tests so that those who decided could see me,” he said.

“They weren’t entirely sure as I didn’t come from a big club. They had to be very sure and it was difficult, but in the end, it was achieved.”

CD Areosa are a lower division Spanish club and Bueno had to go from there to Wolves. The transition wasn’t easy for him initially.

“At first, it’s a little ‘shock’. I came to take the test and my colleagues at Areosa were amazed. When the decision was made to go there it was a surprise. Nobody expected it. I had a very big illusion of coming to Wolves. It was hard at first, but it was what I wanted the most,” the defender explained.

Bueno made his debut for Wolves after they sacked Bruno Lage in October. The latter was replaced by Lopetegui in November and the former Sevilla manager has taken advantage of the World Cup break to drill his tactics.

On Lopetegui’s arrival, Bueno said: “Very well. We are all working together. This break has been great for us to be able to start from scratch and work with him, take his concepts and be able to better build our way of playing to be ready for this second stage of the Premier League.

“Individually, I like him to give me specific advice. I love being able to learn with him.”

On November 2nd, the Spaniard signed a new four-year deal at Wolves. However, it didn’t stop Mundo from asking him about the possibility of returning to Spain.

“I have just renewed with Wolves. I didn’t think twice when they offered it to me. I am very happy here. They have given me the opportunity to be a professional and I only think about giving one hundred percent,” Bueno stressed.

“You can never say no to anything, but right now I’m focused on Wolves. I really like the Premier League. La Liga is also one of the best leagues in the world. It would be nice, but now I’m focused here.”
