Burnley confirmed the signing of Joel Mumbongo in October after the 20-year-old impressed during a trial with their U23 side.
The young forward has so far scored three times in two games for Steve Stone’s side and his brace against Crewe helped Burnley climb to the top of the Professional Development League table.
Mumbongo initially started his career with Hacken in 2017 and moved to Ustikens the following year. In 2018, he joined Italian side Hellas Verona and was released by them in the summer of 2019.
Speaking to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen, Mumbongo thanked the English side for signing him after his tough spell in Italy.
“I am grateful that they believe in me and have given me the chance. We have a facility here that is as good as it is and there is everything you need to develop. It is incredibly nice to be here,” he said.
“I just felt that I was ready to take the step. It is of course different for everyone, and some like to stay longer, but when the opportunity came for me there was no question about it.
“I think it felt good. It’s a bit different pace than in Italy, but it’s been easy to get into it, as it reminds a bit of Swedish football. It’s physical. It’s not pretty to play football here, but you’re doing what’s needed to win games.
“I’ve learned a lot about myself. It was tough to come from Italy and adapt, but I have learned a lot and now I know that I can do it. After all, it is easy to focus on football and now I am also closer to Sweden.”
Sean Dyche’s Burnley have the reputation of playing physical football and even though Mumbongo has not been given an opportunity in the first team, he claims the style suits him.
“We’re very physical and it suits me well. I like being physical and they’ve helped me use everything I have. I can get even faster and stronger, but they help me get out the ones I have in me. I’m going to be aggressive all the time, that’s what it takes in such a club,” Mumbongo explained.
“I have what it takes and the way I play is well suited for England. Then it’s just up to me to be ready, get better with every day and take the chance when it comes. Just embrace it.”
Mumbongo may not be a well known figure, and for those who are unaware of his abilities, he’s given a description of himself.
“I’m physical, that’s what makes me who I am. I know how I use my body and I’m fearless. I don’t really like talking about myself, but for those who haven’t seen me, I’d describe myself that way,” the attacker stressed.
