On Tuesday, Portuguese newspaper Record had a story talking about the chances that Sporting have of holding Matheus Nunes for longer, despite the interest from Manchester City and other Premier League clubs in landing him this summer.
The possibility of his permanence with the Lions ended up being approached by the player’s godfather, who had an interview with Rádio Renascença.
Speaking to Bola Branca show, Humberto Salvador claimed the player could indeed stay at Sporting for another season, despite the attention he draws from other clubs.
“If he stays at Sporting, he will be happy. If the opportunity arises to go to a great European, if Sporting negotiate and he wants to go, if they are in tune, things happen,” said Salvador (via Record).
When covering the story, Record points out that the midfielder is still wanted by Manchester City, adding the quotes from Salvador saying there are no talks for Nunes’ departure now.
“He’s a Sporting player and has four more years on his contract. Whatever the situation, he will evaluate the project if it is also interesting for him. But it makes no sense to be talking about something that is not a reality. There are no offers.”
The last time the Portuguese media talked about Manchester City’s chase for Nunes, it was claimed the English club became ‘even more attentive’ to him since seeing him in action in the Champions League. It was also said that Sporting won’t let him go for much less than €60m, which is the price of his release clause.
