On Wednesday, Portuguese newspaper A Bola had a story saying claiming Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira was in London with agent Jorge Mendes to negotiate the transfers of Ederson and Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Pereira.
‘Luis Filipe Vieira, president of Benfica, finds himself in London with agent Jorge Mendes to advance, in strength, negotiations with Manchester United who, as known, are interested in some pearls from the Luz.’
But on Friday, the slant has changed. The newspaper is claiming that Luis Filipe Vieira was actually in Monaco, but the English media would have noticed that he’s been in London with agent Jorge Mendes.
After attributing their own earlier claims to the English media, they also say Ederson and Joel were dragged into by the press here, as if they hadn’t published anything about the matter.
This is not the first time we see something like this coming from Portugal. Rumours starting from their papers and going back and forth so people in Portugal will be more likely to believe it just because it seems to be coming from the English press.
Vieira has been said to be in London or Manchester many times this season, but as we’ve just seen, it’s worth taking the claims with some doubt.
Manchester United will continue to be linked with Benfica players until the window closes and, who knows, this could be the summer they actually buy one.
