With Kepa to Real Madrid once again being covered across the Spanish media, even on Christmas Day, there was bound to be a Newcastle United reference in one of the articles.
Marca have a look at the goalkeeper’s situation, and how easy Madrid will make it for him to leave the club during the January window. Casilla is in his second stint at Madrid and came through the Spanish club’s academy, which creates a lot of good feeling towards the player.
There’s also something of a moral debt. Marca once again explain that Newcastle United, led by their eager manager Rafa Benitez, made an approach for Kepa during the January transfer window, but Madrid knocked the offer back, not even wanting to discuss the terms of a sale.
Given that Kepa will now be signed, that situation seems somewhat unfair. Casilla could now be settled at Newcastle United and a fully fledged Premier League player, rather than searching around for a new club midway through the season.
With that in mind, Real Madrid will make the transfer as easy as possible for Casilla, and there’s even suggestions he could move to Newcastle United, or any other interested club, for free.
A brilliant chance for Benitez to get his man during January.
